I had 8 stitches on my face, 5 in one place and 3 in another location. The place where I had 5 stitches, I applied this religiously, several times every day. The place where i had 3 stitches, I applied it just about every day. About 3 months after I had the stitches removed and used Mederma, I had a chemical peel done,which is also a good way to diminish scars! Interestingly, the place where I had the most stitches but applied Mederma more frequently, it was fine. The other area, no damage done, but it actually stung a bit more there than anywhere else on the face. 2 wounds obtained at the same time, healed at different rates. I don't think that's a sugar pill effect.
The SPF can irritate some people's skin(it irritated mine a little), but for the first year, exposure to sun can cause permanent discoloration on a scar. IMO, It's best to tolerate a temporary little(very minor!)annoyance and heal well rather than not be irritated and have permanent damage.
When it comes to scars, the main goal is to stimulate the cell turnover rate. The most effective ways are chemical peels or laser resurfacing, especially for atrophic scars. TCA and glycolic peels are helpful, and most likely, you will need more than one treatment (depending on the strength of the peel). Regarding collagen and scarring: it will only plump up the skin temporarily- collagen is molecularly far too large to penetrate into the dermis.
